999,999 lawyers now.
Jun. 5th, 2008 10:31 amThe Florida Bar has finally rid the state of possibly its worst lawyer - loony Christofascist Jack Thompson.
Yesterday, Florida Bar Referee Dava Tunis recommended that Thompson's law license be suspended for 10 years (called an "enhanced disbarment", even though Thompson isn't permanently barred from practicing law).
Thompson is noted for blaming every violent crime on video games and interfering with local lawyers' representation of alleged criminals - particularly Columbus, Ohio freeway sniper Charles McCoy. McCoy's lawyer wanted to establish an insanity defense due to a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
Thompson intervened in the case to unseal a search warrant to blame the shootings on video games - possibly subjecting McCoy to the death penalty to bolster Thompson's crusade against the games. (In the end, McCoy was sentenced to 27 years in prison as a result of a plea bargain; the jury hung at trial on whether to judge McCoy guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity.)
To top it off, Thompson refused to accept the decision, claiming that the referee "improperly took a loyalty oath".
Hmmm... where have we seen this before - a defendant with no way out saying a judge had no right to rule because of oath technicalities. Oh yeah - Lon Mabon.... (Link to non-wingnut news site.)
Look up Jack Thompson's Wikipedia entry for some fun, and instruction on how *not* to be a lawyer.
