Culture, I think...
Mar. 1st, 2007 01:00 amAmy and I have become homebodies recently, and I realize my mid-to-late 90s nightlife days are long past, but we have had some outings over the past few days.
Friday night we went to see Monette Sudler at Jimmy Mak's. We arrived late to the show and sat in the balcony, which I kind of preferred - we weren't near the stage, but the balcony was more intimate than the larger showroom. I might prefer this in the future if we see a show at Jimmy Mak's.
Tuesday night, we saw The Pillowman, a bizarre play about the coincidence of a writer's gruesome mostly-unpublished tales inspiring copycat murders.
( Spoilers and analysis... )
I'm also impressed by the new Gerding Theater at the Armory, even though I'm not a fan of early 21st Century architecture (on the inside). I think the historic facade of the building takes away the shock - the historic late 19th Century armory walls provide a huge contrast with the rest of the history-be-damned-we're-pitching-condos-to-yuppies Pearl.
I also like the Life of Riley tavern, where we went after the show. A bit spendy, but un-Pearl, and no freakin' smoking...
