This is What Fascism Looks Like...
Mar. 28th, 2003 06:55 pmHop off and take a look at this. Two Portland police officers, including a sergeant who previously intentionally pepper-sprayed a TV camerawoman, have this woman cornered and are pepper-spraying her from close range.
And what's worse, they're *laughing* about it.
Someone might ask about where the rest of the tape is. Well, I saw the entire incident on tape, in real-time and in slow motion. It's just as bad, if not worse, than the pictures show. The two cops (Sgt. Kruger and Officer Hanousek) blast away at her from about two feet away for no reason.
Many of the Portlanders with blogs have criticized anti-war protesters for tactics such as blocking bridges or sitting down in the middle of the street. I disagree with those tactics; they tend to piss people off more than convert them to your cause or affirm the beliefs of a citizen who does not want to speak up.
But the march this woman was participating in was peaceful and remained on the sidewalk. The cops brutalized her for the sheer sadistic joy of it. There also is footage on the same tape of a young man being beaten up, arrested, and pepper-sprayed at close range while being handcuffed by a goon squad (otherwise known as a Rapid Response Team) for the heinous crime of showing an anti-war sign to a battle wagon full of riot cops *from the sidewalk*.
