I had my first arbitration hearing of my new practice this morning.....the case was a lost cause, and the only reason it went to arbitration was that we couldn't come up with a reasonable settlement offer. Lost on the main affirmative defenses, but beat back a request for punitive damages out of nowhere (which the other attorney, a younger associate, faxed me his intentions yesterday afternoon).
No matter...my client is likely to file for bankruptcy anyway....I did all I could do with the evidence I had in our favor.
I went to a conference of bankruptcy lawyers in Seattle Thursday through Saturday. (No, it wasn't as boring, or evil, as you might think.) It was pretty informative, and I got to chat with some other Portland lawyers, who helped me out with some questions I had.
I arrived late for the Saturday morning session, and was chatting with three other lawyers and a trustee...the chat was probably more informative than the planned sessions.
Friday night I went to Twice Sold Tales and got Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynmann!, Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed , and a baseball history book. And petted four of the six cats in residence there.
Speaking of cats, the stray that Brendan and spot took in had kittens this morning - one white one, two white-and-black ones, and one gray tabby. Pictures WILL follow!
