This movie is something completely different. This isn't a compliment or
a criticism; it's just a statement of fact.

Musicals are a well-defined genre of film; this is perhaps the first
example of a gameal movie - breaks and plot advancement are done by
video game sequences instead of songs.

Dorky slacker Scott tries to win the heart of a mysterious girl who he
sees (and embarassingly strikes out with) at a party, but who just happens
to deliver a package to him the next day. But she has a secret....she
has seven evil exes who try to destroy him....

But the plot really isn't the focus of this film. It's the execution of
the video game sequences and the music; it's the snarkiness of the supporting
characters and the wisening up of the naive Knives Chau (Scott's high-school
student girlfriend (!) at the beginning of the movie), and the assumption
that the audience is familiar with popular culture (as well as niche culture
like Bollywood and Shakespeare).

The biggest flaw in the movie was Michael Cera's portrayal of Scott for the first
half of the movie. Scott comes off not as a lovable loser, but as socially delayed,
so much so that in states like Oregon and California, he'd be considered
a pedophile.

Scott matures through his quest, and his acquisition of a "self-respect power-up"
is appreciated.

One scene is troubling - Scott wears a Smashing Pumpkins "Zero" shirt during it.
If he's wearing it as a retro embellishment, he's making me feel *old*. I can
take kids reviving the 80s, but when you start reviving the early-mid-90s...

I assumed he was wearing it as a contrast to Todd's 3 shirt.

That was going through my mind as well....but my past is catching up with me and is going to be co-opted by kids very soon.

Have you read the comics?

The SP shirt is because SP is his favorite band (or Bryan Lee O'Malley's). One of the comics is Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness.

Nope, haven't read the comics....but that certainly explains things, although the lag between the comics and movie have set up a nostalgia trap for me.
