Federal judge Vaughn Walker invalidates Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriages, citing "no rational basis" for the discriminatory law.

It's about time. I think I'm a pretty normal (don't laugh) heterosexual married man. Most of my friends have married in the past decade. I can't see how allowing committed same-sex couples to marry could possibly have any impact whatsoever on their marriages.

On the other hand, Measure 36 (Oregon's version of Proposition 8, thinks this marriage is fine and dandy. WARNING: You will need brain bleach after following this link.

Judge Walker has an interesting combination of influences; he's gay, but is a conservative Law and Economics theorist appointed to the bench by George H.W. Bush.

Another indication of same-sex marriage not necessarily being just for liberals only is one of the lead counsels for the plaintiffs - Ted Olson, former Solicitor General during the George W. Bush administration and counsel for Ronald Reagan during the Iran-Contra scandal.

This ruling only affects California; however, if Judge Walker's decision is upheld by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, it would apply to the whole circuit, including Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Arizona.

I seriously doubt my Nevada-performed, Oregon-based marriage to Amy would be affected one iota by the 9th Circuit upholding Judge Walker's decision. Just sayin'....
